A few questions I’m often asked. If yours isn’t here, you’re welcome to get in touch — there’s no pressure.
Are you a midwife?
No. I’m a birth doula — not a midwife or medical practitioner. I don’t do clinical tasks (monitoring, examinations, medical advice or treatment). I’m there for continuous support, information and advocacy within what we’ve agreed. Clinical care stays with you and your midwifery/medical team.
What do you actually do?
I support you through pregnancy and birth in the way that fits your package — antenatal visits, birth mapping, continuous labour support (home, freebirth preparation or hospital), and postpartum offerings like Closing the Bones and Reiki where that’s part of what we’ve chosen together.
Will you tell me what to do?
No. There is no one way to birth — just your way. My role is to support your decisions with information and presence, not to direct or override them.
When are you on call?
If birth support is included, I’m on call 24 hours a day from 14 days before your estimated due date until your baby is born. I’ll let you know in advance if I’m ever unavailable.
When should I call you in labour?
As soon as you think you might be in labour — day or night. That includes a show, waters, bowel movements, or any change that makes you wonder. Early contact helps us decide what to do next together. Allow about 60 minutes for local travel, or up to 90 minutes if you live further away.
Which areas do you cover?
Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Highcliffe, Wimborne, the New Forest and nearby towns, plus further afield including Southampton, Salisbury, Wareham and Swanage. Travel over 15 miles incurs an additional travel fee — we can confirm that when we talk. I also work online UK-wide for preparation support. See Areas Covered for the full list.
What about privacy?
What you share with me stays confidential. I don’t post about clients on social media without clear written consent. I work within the Birth Free Collective for professional supervision; any sharing there is anonymised unless you’ve agreed otherwise in writing.
How do payments work?
We agree the package and fee when we book. A retaining fee is due when you sign and holds your place. The rest follows the payment plan we set out together.
Can antenatal visits be moved?
Yes — with at least 48 hours’ notice where possible, depending on availability.
What if plans change?
Full terms (including cancellations and refunds) are in the agreement we sign together. I’m always happy to talk things through before you commit — a discovery call is the easiest place to ask.
