Top 5 Pregnancy Tips to Support a Healthy Birth

Congratulations on your pregnancy! This is an exciting and transformative time, and it’s completely normal to feel both joy and overwhelm as you begin preparing for birth and parenthood.

As a doula, I believe pregnancy is not just about reaching the end goal of birth, but about nurturing your body, your baby, and your confidence along the way.

Here are five simple but powerful ways to support your body and mind during pregnancy and help prepare for birth.

1. Nourish and Hydrate Your Body

Growing a baby is incredible work, and your body needs the right support to do it well.

Staying hydrated and eating nutrient-dense foods helps support your baby’s development and your own wellbeing during pregnancy.

Try to focus on:

  • plenty of water throughout the day
  • protein-rich foods
  • leafy greens and colourful vegetables
  • fibre for digestion

Many people find inspiration in approaches like the Mediterranean or DASH diet, which prioritise whole foods and balanced nutrition.

And of course… there is always room for cake.

Pregnancy is about nourishment, not perfection.

2. Create Space for Relaxation and Connection

Pregnancy is not just a physical experience — it is emotional and mental too.

Taking time to relax each day helps reduce stress, supports your nervous system and gives you space to connect with your baby and your intuition.

This doesn’t need to be complicated.

You might try:

  • a gentle walk
  • a warm bath
  • quiet breathing for a few minutes
  • sitting with your hands on your bump and noticing movements

Even 10 minutes of intentional stillness can make a huge difference.

These moments also help you begin tuning into the inner guidance that becomes incredibly valuable during labour.

3. Support Your Body with Movement and Alignment

Your body is designed for birth, but modern lifestyles can sometimes create tension or imbalance that makes pregnancy more uncomfortable.

Gentle movement can help keep your body aligned and flexible as your baby grows.

Some supportive options include:

  • pregnancy yoga
  • Pilates
  • walking or swimming
  • bodywork such as physiotherapy, chiropractic care or birth biomechanics

Movement not only supports physical comfort but also helps you develop body awareness, which can be incredibly helpful when finding positions that feel right during labour

4. Think Beyond the Birth Day

Birth is a powerful moment, but it’s also part of a much bigger journey.

Taking time during pregnancy to reflect on what matters most to you can help guide your decisions as you prepare for birth and the postpartum period.

You might consider:

  • how you hope to feel during birth
  • the kind of support you want around you
  • the environment that helps you feel safe and relaxed
  • the support you’ll need after your baby arrives

Understanding your options and learning about the different paths birth can take allows you to make decisions that align with your values.

Many families find that creating a birth map or birth plan helps bring clarity and confidence to this process

5. Understand the Hormones of Birth

Birth is a beautifully orchestrated physiological process driven by hormones and the nervous system.

One of the most important hormones during labour is oxytocin — often called the love hormone.

Oxytocin flows best when we feel:

  • safe
  • relaxed
  • private
  • supported

One exercise I love to explore with clients is imagining the perfect environment for an intimate date night.

What lighting would you have?
What music would be playing?
Would there be soft blankets, candles, water, or quiet?

Designing a space like this can help you think about how to create an environment that supports your body’s natural birth hormones.
