What Is Reiki? Understanding This Gentle Energy Healing

Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that supports balance in the body, mind and emotions.

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:

  • Rei – universal or spiritual wisdom
  • Ki – life force energy

Together they describe the universal life energy that flows through all living things.

Reiki has been used for over a century as a way to promote relaxation, emotional healing and physical wellbeing. During a Reiki session, energy is channelled through the practitioner’s hands to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance.

Many people experience Reiki as deeply calming, grounding and restorative.

How Reiki Works

Our bodies are not only physical – they are also energetic.

When our energy is flowing freely we tend to feel:

  • calm
  • emotionally balanced
  • physically well
  • connected to ourselves

However, stress, fear, trauma or exhaustion can disrupt this flow.

Reiki works by gently supporting the movement of energy through the body, helping to release tension and restore balance.

During a session you simply lie or sit comfortably while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. Many people experience sensations such as warmth, relaxation or a feeling of deep peace.

Reiki does not force anything to happen. Instead it supports the body’s own natural healing processes.

The Chakra System and Energy Balance

Reiki is often used to support the body’s energy centres, known as chakras.

Chakras are believed to be energetic hubs that influence different aspects of our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

There are seven main chakras, each connected to different qualities within us.

Crown Chakra – Connection and Spiritual Support

The crown chakra relates to our connection to something greater than ourselves.

In pregnancy and birth this can sometimes feel like a sense of surrender or trust in the process of life unfolding.

Many mothers describe birth as a moment where they allow themselves to step out of the way and trust the deeper wisdom of their body.

Third Eye Chakra – Intuition and Inner Knowing

The third eye is the centre of intuition and vision.

Pregnancy can be a time when many people feel more connected to their instincts and inner guidance.

Practices such as meditation, quiet reflection or visualisation can help strengthen this intuitive connection and support the creation of a positive birth vision.

Throat Chakra – Voice and Expression

The throat chakra relates to communication and speaking your truth.

Interestingly, there is an energetic connection often described between the throat and the cervix. When the jaw and throat are relaxed, the body can also relax more deeply during labour.

Using the voice through sound, humming or low tones during labour can be a powerful way to support the body’s natural rhythms.

Heart Chakra – Love and Connection

The heart chakra represents compassion, love and emotional openness.

Pregnancy often brings a natural softening and expansion of the heart as you begin to connect with your baby and your role as a parent.

Practising gratitude, self-compassion and connection can help nurture this energy.

Solar Plexus Chakra – Confidence and Personal Power

This chakra relates to self-belief and empowerment.

Pregnancy can be a powerful time to explore your beliefs about birth and to strengthen your confidence in your body’s abilities.

Feeling supported and informed helps many people reconnect with their own sense of power in the birth process.

Sacral Chakra – Creativity and Flow

The sacral chakra is connected to creativity, emotions and feminine energy.

Growing a baby is one of the most profound creative acts the body can experience.

This energy centre is also closely linked to the hormone oxytocin, which supports bonding, pleasure and the rhythmic flow of labour.

Root Chakra – Safety and Grounding

The root chakra relates to safety, security and feeling grounded in the body.

For birth to unfold physiologically, a mother needs to feel safe and supported in her environment.

This is why choosing the right birth space and support team can be so important.

Feeling safe allows the body to soften and open to the natural process of labour.

The Benefits of Reiki

People seek Reiki for many different reasons, but common benefits include:

  • deep relaxation
  • reduced stress and anxiety
  • emotional release and balance
  • improved sleep
  • a greater sense of calm and clarity
  • support during times of transition

Because Reiki is so gentle, it can be a supportive therapy during many stages of life.

In future posts I’ll explore how Reiki can support:

Experiencing Reiki

Reiki is a deeply individual experience.

Some people feel warmth or gentle waves of energy, while others simply notice a sense of calm or relaxation.

There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki – the energy simply supports what your body needs most in that moment.
